The Irish Republican Socialist Party in Strabane has branded the Housing Executive and Road Services treatment of elderly residents in the Ballycolman Estate a disgrace. The IRSP was informed six weeks ago that residents of “Grannys Alley” were involved in discussions with the NIHE and the Road Service for the last two years on getting Ivy and Hedges removed. The fallen leaves of the Ivy and Hedges where making the foot path treacherous for the elderly residents.
Jimmy McCafferty of the IRSPs Ballycolman Est Cumann continues “The elderly residents contacted the IRSP six weeks ago and asked us to intervene to resolve the issue. We contacted the Housing Executive and the Roads service but neither would take responsibility for the area. Then we heard that an elderly resident who lives in one of the bungalows had slipped and fallen on the leaves in “Grannys Alley” so then the IRSP took action and we cut and disposed of the problem ourselves. The apathy shown towards these vulnerable members of the community by the NIHE and the Roads Service is a disgrace.”
