The IRSP are calling on Sinn Féin to show a distinct act of solidarity with the people of Palestine and formally & publicly cut ties with their American friends of Israel following the murder of journalist Shireen Abu Aqla.
Dan Murphy, the IRSP representative for West Belfast has said, “Over the past few months we have seen elected Sinn Féin members like Pat Sheehan meeting and endorsing people like US congressman Richie Neal, a man who is individually one of Israels most powerful friends, a man who is formally endorsed and his election campaigns funded by the state of Israel and a man who is trying to bring out US laws that make it illegal to boycott Israeli goods.”
Al Jazeera Journalist Shireen Abu Aqla was murdered by the Israeli army on Wednesday while reporting in the West Bank.
Dan went on, “The people of West Belfast have a history of witnessing such acts. Innocent journalists & activists shot by an unwanted and foreign army. While our people were being gunned down, British politicians in West Minster were defending these acts, it is daunting to think representatives of West Belfast, who are now on the other foot are endorsing politicians and allies of the Israeli army.”
